For some students online learning is a lot easier than traditional school settings. There is less chance of distractions, more one on one help for tough subjects, and no chance of feeling bullied or embarrassed by classmates. With that, there are still those that are not able to learn in the home through online courses. Most likely, this is due to them feeling as though they are at home and should be free to do what they want to do. To get beyond this, you should look for success tips for online learning.
Creating a Stress-Free Environment
Kids, regardless of age, can get a little stressed when learning something new. The learning coach, or parent, should understand this and be able to remain calm during the times that the student is struggling. Homeschooling is a full-time job. It does not start with courses and it does not end when the computer turns off. Instead of blowing a gasket over a math problem that stumps your child, try to look for things around the house that you can do to encourage your child to keep practicing. Show them practical ways to use math throughout the day. Even the bigger and scarier problems can be put to use off the computer.
Limit Distractions
Distractions are a part of life. No one can escape them all. However, if your child is easily distracted, you may have to put in more effort to keep them on task. Perhaps they need to be in a bedroom that does not have toys in it, no television, and no little brothers or sisters. Perhaps they are okay in their room, as long as siblings are not in there or maybe they can study in the kitchen while the television is on in the living room. Some kids need a computer desk to work at and others enjoy sitting on a couch for school more. There are even some kids that get bored if they sit in the same place every day and they need to change it up by doing a day here and a day there. Your child will have to be the guide to show you what they need. You have to be able to pay attention to their needs.
Stay on Track
Online learning is very flexible. However, you need to keep in mind that what you skip today will have to be made up tomorrow. If your child misses out on a day of class, make it up as soon as possible. If you end up a week behind due to illness or other things, you will have to spend double the time to catch up. In this situation, you may even want to keep it to shorter days of school but add weekends and holidays to your list of “school” days. Otherwise, you will end up constantly feeling more stress to get them caught up and it will impact them as well. For most families, this means that they have a schedule and stick to it at all costs.
